Farm Manager
Job Overview
The Farm & Facility Manager oversees the day-to-day maintenance, production, and operational systems of Working Food’s growing spaces. This role supports food production, seed saving, educational gardens, and community engagement by maintaining healthy, functional, and welcoming farm and garden environments.
With the support of staff, volunteers, interns, and program participants, the Manager oversees planting, harvesting, greenhouse operations, infrastructure maintenance, compost systems, irrigation, and seasonal farm planning across multiple growing areas totaling less than one acre.
We are seeking someone with production farming or agricultural leadership experience who can apply their skills immediately. In this year-long, part-time training position, the Manager will gain a deep understanding of Working Food's programs, participate in planning for our future farm campus, and prepare to assume leadership of expanded growing spaces once we relocate. This position is ideal for someone who is hands-on, systems-minded, and experienced in sustainable growing practices, crop planning, farm maintenance, and outdoor operational management.

Farm & Garden Stewardship
Coordinate crop planning, seasonal planting, cultivation, harvest, and maintenance across all the Working Food growing spaces
Maintain the production farm that supports CSA distribution and community food donations
Maintain the seed gardens that support seed donations and sales
Assist with seasonal garden establishment and end-of-season maintenance at five youth garden sites
Maintain organized, healthy, and welcoming farm and garden environments
Support ecological and sustainable growing practices across all sites
Help design, establish, and refine growing spaces for Working Food's planned full-circle farm campus, contributing practical expertise to the development of future farm operations
Food Harvest & Distribution Support
Coordinate accurate and efficient fulfillment of weekly harvest needs, including CSA shares, community donations, and other produce distribution channels
Harvest, wash, and pack produce for CSA distribution and community donations
Coordinate with Local Food Connection staff to support smooth food distribution systems
Maintain food safety and post-harvest handling standards
Greenhouse & Propagation Management
Manage greenhouse operations
Coordinate propagation and seedling needs for youth gardens, seed gardens, and farm growing spaces
Monitor plant health and troubleshoot pest or disease pressure
Farm Infrastructure & Facilities Maintenance
Maintain irrigation systems, fencing, pathways, tools, equipment, and other farm infrastructure
Troubleshoot and complete routine repairs and maintenance projects across current and future growing spaces
Establish and maintain a composting system to support all garden spaces as operations expand
Coordinate purchasing and organization of farm materials, including mulch, compost, fertilizers, frost cloth, tools, and supplies
Support safe, clean, and functional workspaces across all farm and garden areas
Team & Organizational Contributions
Collaborate with staff, volunteers, interns, and program participants to support farm operations and shared organizational goals
Communicate clearly about seasonal priorities, maintenance needs, and operational challenges
Participate in team meetings and support ongoing program development
Collaborate across program areas to support shared organizational goals
Uphold Working Food’s commitment to equity, access, and community impact

3 years experience in production farming, market gardening, greenhouse operations, CSA management, or related agricultural work
Knowledge of sustainable growing practices, crop planning, compost systems, greenhouse propagation, and post-harvest handling
Ability to coordinate complex outdoor operations and manage competing priorities
Experience using farm tools, equipment, and machinery safely
Comfortable troubleshooting infrastructure issues
Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in dynamic outdoor environments
While production farming experience is strongly preferred, Working Food is willing to train the right person

Comfort working outdoors in varied conditions, including heat, cold, rain, uneven terrain, and exposure to insects, snakes, and other wildlife
Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and move for extended periods
Ability to safely use farm equipment, power tools, lawn equipment, and machinery

$22.71 per hour
18 paid holidays, 17 days of paid time off (PTO), 10 paid sick/care days, and additional leave benefits in accordance with Working Food's leave policies
Annual cost-of-living and merit increases may be considered by the Board of Directors based on organizational performance and available funding

Remaining hours may be scheduled flexibly based on program needs and staff availability
This is an in-person position based in Gainesville, Florida
The anticipated start date is mid-August 2026
This position is designed as a one-year training and development opportunity during a period of organizational growth. Working Food anticipates opportunities for additional hours, expanded responsibilities, and long-term leadership as the organization transitions to a new farm campus and expands growing space in summer 2027.

Working Food’s Youth Program offers interdisciplinary learning experiences that encourage curiosity and create opportunities for students to develop empowering knowledge and skills alongside neighbors and friends in safe, shared community spaces. Our in-garden programming, hosted at five community centers for pre-K through high school aged students, includes high-quality, weekly, hands-on gardening classes and nutrition-centered cooking classes that use culturally relevant recipes and ingredients grown by students. Our systems-based culinary programming includes Young Chefs cooking classes for teens, culinary arts training and food safety certification for young adults, and a Food Systems Leadership internship for 14-17 year olds. The Youth Programs Intern will assist with all aspects of Working Food’s Youth Programs.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
The Youth Programs Intern will assist the Youth Programs Manager and Youth Programs Director in providing high quality enrichment classes. This will include assisting in at least two of five weekly gardening classes for pre-K through middle school students, acting as an aide in teaching as well as assisting youth with hands-on projects. The Intern will be responsible for assisting with the set-up and break-down of classes, which are often held outdoors. The Intern may also assist with youth day camps or workshops. Depending on availability, the Intern may assist with youth culinary classes in the Working Food kitchen, which would include hands-on assistance with class set-up and break-down, class preparation and research in the Working Food office, greenhouse work at GROW HUB, and/or garden maintenance at various community centers around town.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide general guidance and instruction during activities, ensuring that participants understand the rules and objectives. Provide one-on-one assistance for students who may need extra attention.
Serve as a positive role model and mentor for participants, offering support and encouragement during classes.
Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants at all times. The intern will never be expected to provide supervision alone, but will be an additional responsible adult in garden and kitchen classes.
Foster a fun and inclusive atmosphere where participants feel motivated and excited to participate.
Respect and appreciate cultural diversity among participants and colleagues.
Mediate conflicts among participants diplomatically and fairly.
Be prepared to administer basic first aid and respond to emergencies as needed, typically by promptly notifying Working Food Staff.
Assist with logistical tasks such as setting up equipment, organizing supplies, and cleaning up after activities.
Be flexible and adaptable to changes in schedules, weather conditions, or participant needs.
Maintain open and clear communication with Working Food staff.
Work respectfully under the direction of community partners and their staff – ie City of Gainesville, Cultural Arts Coalition, Greater Duval Neighborhood Association, Chef Empowerment, Project Youthbuild, and Southwest Advocacy Group.
Perform basic gardening tasks with supervision including, but not limited to, weeding, watering, applying soil amendments, trellising, and pruning.
Perform basic greenhouse tasks with supervision including, but not limited to, seeding trays, up-potting, thinning seedlings, watering.
Perform basic kitchen prep tasks with supervision including, but not limited to, cutting vegetables, cooking, and baking.

The background check will be completed at the expense of Working Food.
Working Food will only disqualify prospective interns with past charges that pose a threat to children. Non-violent offenses will not prevent participation in the program.
The results of the background check are not shared with UF/SFC, if they are the institution sponsoring the internship.
