Local Food Manager

The Local Food Manager supports the day-to-day operations of Working Food’s Local Food Connection program, including the Online Farmers Market and community food donations. This role coordinates the efficient flow of products from local farms, producers, and Working Food’s own growing spaces to customers, community partners, and food pantries. 

The manager plays a hands-on role in weekly logistics, order fulfillment, and distribution, while supporting strong systems and clear communication across vendors, customers, and partners. This position is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, systems-minded, and committed to strengthening a community-rooted local food system.


Reports To

Working Food’s Local Food Director

  • Online Market Operations

    • Prepare for and execute weekly online market and food distribution activities

    • Receive and verify product deliveries from local farmers and producers, ensuring quality, accuracy, and proper labeling

    • Organize products in cold and dry storage according to food safety and quality standards

    • Pack customer orders accurately using established systems and packing lists

    • Coordinate and support distribution to customer pickup sites and community partners

    • Maintain clean, organized, and functional workspaces, including the kitchen, walk-in cooler, and packing areas

    Community Food Access + CSA Coordination

    • Coordinate the aggregation of donated food from local farms and Working Food’s gardens

    • Track incoming donations, organize storage, and ensure timely distribution to community partners

    • Support weekly donation walk-up and CSA distribution days at the Giving Garden Farm. 

    • Coordinate logistics for community partner pick ups or deliveries

    • Work closely with the farm manager to ensure accurate and efficient CSA and donation fulfillment 

    Vendor & Product Coordination

    • Support communication with vendors regarding deliveries, product availability, and logistics

    • Track product discrepancies, substitutions, and inventory needs

    • Assist with onboarding new vendors and maintaining accurate product information

    Customer & Order Support

    • Respond to customer questions and concerns via email and phone in a timely and professional manner

    • Track and resolve order issues, including refunds, substitutions, and adjustments

    • Ensure clear communication with customers regarding pickup logistics, timing, and changes

    Systems & Administrative Support

    • Maintain accurate records of orders, inventory, and distribution using spreadsheets and online platforms

    • Support continuous improvement of workflows, systems, and operational efficiency

    • Assist with basic reporting and documentation as needed

    Team & Organizational Contributions

    • Contribute to a collaborative, respectful, and mission-driven team culture

    • Communicate clearly about progress, challenges, and opportunities for improvement

    • Participate in team meetings and support ongoing program development

    • High level of comfort working with digital tools, including the ability to quickly learn and navigate new systems

    • Strong proficiency in Google Sheets or Excel, including the ability to manage and interpret data for order tracking and inventory

    • Experience using or managing online platforms (e-commerce, ordering systems, CRM tools, or similar)

    • Ability to manage multiple moving pieces in a fast-paced, logistics-focused environment

    • Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills

    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

    • Experience in food systems, agriculture, logistics, fulfillment, or related fields is a plus

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs

    • Comfort working in varied conditions, including heat and cold

    • Comfort standing for extended periods

    • Ability to safely use equipment such as hand trucks and pallet jacks

    • 20 hours per week

    • $22 per hour

    • Generous paid leave benefits

    • Annual cost-of-living and merit increases are considered by the Board of Directors

    • Monday: 4:00–6:30 pm

    • Wednesday: 1:00–5:00 pm

    • Thursday: 9:00 am–6:00 pm (includes a one-hour break)

    • Remaining hours may be scheduled flexibly based on program needs and staff availability

    • This is an in-person position based in Gainesville, Florida

    • Opportunity for increased hours and expanded responsibilities based on program growth

Internships & Apprenticeships

Current Openings

  • Working Food’s Youth Program offers interdisciplinary learning experiences that encourage curiosity and create opportunities for students to develop empowering knowledge and skills alongside neighbors and friends in safe, shared community spaces. Our in-garden programming, hosted at five community centers for pre-K through high school aged students, includes high-quality, weekly, hands-on gardening classes and nutrition-centered cooking classes that use culturally relevant recipes and ingredients grown by students. Our systems-based culinary programming includes Young Chefs cooking classes for teens, culinary arts training and food safety certification for young adults, and a Food Systems Leadership internship for 14-17 year olds. The Youth Programs Intern will assist with all aspects of Working Food’s Youth Programs.

    INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW 

    The Youth Programs Intern will assist the Youth Programs Manager and Youth Programs Director in providing high quality enrichment classes.  This will include assisting in at least two of five weekly gardening classes for pre-K through middle school students, acting as an aide in teaching as well as assisting youth with hands-on projects.  The Intern will be responsible for assisting with the set-up and break-down of classes, which are often held outdoors. The Intern may also assist with youth day camps or workshops.  Depending on availability, the Intern may assist with youth culinary classes in the Working Food kitchen, which would include hands-on assistance with class set-up and break-down, class preparation and research in the Working Food office, greenhouse work at GROW HUB, and/or garden maintenance at various community centers around town.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Provide general guidance and instruction during activities, ensuring that participants understand the rules and objectives.  Provide one-on-one assistance for students who may need extra attention.

    • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for participants, offering support and encouragement during classes.

    • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants at all times.  The intern will never be expected to provide supervision alone, but will be an additional responsible adult in garden and kitchen classes.

    • Foster a fun and inclusive atmosphere where participants feel motivated and excited to participate.

    • Respect and appreciate cultural diversity among participants and colleagues.

    • Mediate conflicts among participants diplomatically and fairly.

    • Be prepared to administer basic first aid and respond to emergencies as needed, typically by promptly notifying Working Food Staff. 

    • Assist with logistical tasks such as setting up equipment, organizing supplies, and cleaning up after activities.

    • Be flexible and adaptable to changes in schedules, weather conditions, or participant needs.

    • Maintain open and clear communication with Working Food staff.

    • Work respectfully under the direction of community partners and their staff – ie City of Gainesville, Cultural Arts Coalition, Greater Duval Neighborhood Association, Chef Empowerment, Project Youthbuild, and Southwest Advocacy Group.

    • Perform basic gardening tasks with supervision including, but not limited to, weeding, watering, applying soil amendments, trellising, and pruning.

    • Perform basic greenhouse tasks with supervision including, but not limited to, seeding trays, up-potting, thinning seedlings, watering.

    • Perform basic kitchen prep tasks with supervision including, but not limited to, cutting vegetables, cooking, and baking.

      • The background check will be completed at the expense of Working Food.

      • Working Food will only disqualify prospective interns with past charges that pose a threat to children. Non-violent offenses will not prevent participation in the program. 

      • The results of the background check are not shared with UF/SFC, if they are the institution sponsoring the internship.
